DIMHOLT (BG): Liberation Funeral

Unsigned/Independent

Psychedelic Black Metal

(English below)

Membrii trupei: Asen - chitara (2003 - prezent), Woundheir (aka Monolithe) - voce (2003 - prezent), Rumen - chitara (2005 - prezent), Yavor - bas (2006 - prezent), Stanimir - tobe (2006 - prezent).

DIMHOLT is a Metal group  founded in the Bulgarian city Burgas (the cradle of the black arts when it comes to music), in the 2003, and since then they’ve self-released a demo “Aegri Somnia” in 2007, and an EP - “Live Somnia”, three years later. Their debut album Liberation Funeral was recorded in the Sub Zero Studios, and mastered by none other than Tannenberger from the legendary Austrian band, Abigor.

I must confess that I was intrigued by the name of the band, since in Tolkien’s books Dimholt literally means “dark wood”, and it is situated at the base of the Dwimorberg Mountain, past Dunharrow, the entrance to the Paths of the Dead. This analogy can make you think of bands that are stylistically similar to Summoning or Caladan Brood, which are known for the so-called Tolkien Metal. However, Dimholt is a Psychedelic Black Metal group and two of their songs, in my opinion, clearly state that: “In Tombs” - a mid-tempo piece, where the effect of the riffs is nuanced and there’s a subtle melodiousness in Deha’s voice, the head master at Kaotoxin Records and a member of Imber Luminis and Maladie, who also features in this song; as well as “Armageddon”, a track that keeps the previous pace, but casts a cavalcade of extremely sharp riffs and blast beats.

Although I’ve only mentioned two of the songs from the new album, Dimholt have all that it takes to be representative of the true Black Metal genre. The obscure atmosphere is given by the abrasive, cutting riffs, while the extremely aggressive instrumentals are arranged to match the vocals, which at times remind me of Satyricon, Dark Funeral or Limbonic Art. Not to mention the drums and their blast beats, not too pacey, but strong enough to remind us of the 90s Black Metal.

The one word that comes to my mind while listening to this album is “sophisticated”, since Dimhold have managed to integrate Post-Rock elements without diminishing the intensity and aggressiveness of their compositions.

To conclude, I’d say that Liberation Funeral could channel attention towards the Black Metal underground scene from Bulgaria, a fairly active musical realm that redefines its influences and experiments with the dark sinister and philosophical sides of the Black Metal genre.

Members:      Woundheir - Vocals, Asen - Guitars, Rumen Guitars, Yavor - Bass, Stanimir - Drums.
